During the August 18 board meeting, the Snoqualmie Valley School Board voted to approve a balanced budget for the 2011-12 school year.
Severe budget cuts to K-12 public education from the state legislature last May resulted in a loss of revenues to Snoqualmie Valley schools of approximately $1.8 million. While many other school districts in our state were forced to eliminate positions and severely cut programs last spring, Snoqualmie Valley schools were able to avoid cuts to student programs and avoid reductions to teaching positions. In fact, the District will actually add 3.5 teaching positions this fall, to serve the needs of our growing student population.
Through the past few years of state and federal funding reductions, the District has remained focused on keeping the impact of reductions away from the classroom as much as possible. With prudent planning, the District was able to address the loss in 2011-12 revenues and achieve the balanced budget due to a combination of factors that include: additional levy funds (approved by voters in 2010), increased operational efficiencies, redistributing resources where needs are greatest, and participation fee increases to sustain extracurricular opportunities.
