A two-part series of community meetings was offered in November, 2008, to help raise awareness about school financing and the challenges districts are facing across the State and at local levels. Below is a description and video of each presentation (click on image to view video):
The Snoqualmie Valley PTSA Council and school district joined forces to address how K-12 public education is currently funded in Washington State and how school districts are responding. A "big picture" perspective on state education funding will be presented -- including a historical understanding, current requirements, and future legislative considerations. Guest speaker Kelly Munn, League of Education Voters State Field Director and Issaquah Council PTSA Legislation Chair, is well-versed on this subject and has worked with many districts. An overview from the district on how the Snoqualmie Valley compares state-wide also provided context for our district's current challenges.

The funding challenges specific to the Snoqualmie Valley were presented by the district's Business Services Director Ron Ellis. Topics included: Where the money comes from; How our district spends it; What's driving the budget shortfall for 2009-10; and where we have discretion on spending and cuts. In anticipation of the significant cuts needed to balance the 2009-2010 school budget and the fact that upcoming legislation could require even deeper cutbacks, this meeting addressed the challenges we face.
