Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)
Working Draft ~ September 8, 2006
Letter from Dr. Terry Bergeson, Superintendent of Public Instruction
This working draft of the Grade Level Expectations is a refinement that incorporates suggestions from many members of the Washington mathematics community. This document will continue to develop as we learn more and collect input from the mathematics community. Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) staff, with assistance from other educators, will continue to edit these documents to assure mathematical correctness, clarity, and coherence. As a result of the current refinement, all mathematics documents produced by the OSPI use the same numbering system. We would like all readers to especially note that each grade level expectation is numbered and printed in bold.
Each grade level expectation describes what learning opportunities teachers should provide for students. Listed with each bolded grade level expectation statement are examples of evidences of learning. They are just that, examples of how students may show mastery of the expectations. They are not a checklist and in no way should any one believe that teachers need to teach to all of these. Teachers may want to personalize this document by adding their own examples of what their students have shown as evidences of learning.
Changes At-A-Glance is a document to assist readers in understanding what some of the changes are. It is in no way an exhaustive list.
