The special education paraprofessional's responsibilities may include the following: direct instruction in small group in individual academic areas, tutorial services in study skills, assisting students in general education classes, implementation of modified curriculum, implementation of alternative curriculum materials, assisting teachers with testing, obtaining weekly and/or bi-weekly progress reports of students, toileting, feeding, supervision in unstructured activities, and material preparation as needed.
Reading: This direct instruction class focuses on building the students' phonics, reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
Written Language: The written language class uses direct instruction methods to teach basic writing skills. The students complete daily oral language activities that emphasize the rules of capitalization, punctuation, and usage. Journal writing is also incorporated into the program. The students learn spelling words from The Phonological Awareness program, the Multisyllabic Word Reading program, Spelling Power, or lists of frequently used words. Students are taught to write a proper paragraph and this skill is continually practiced. Various writing projects are completed throughout the yearlong course.
Math: The math class utilizes direct instruction methods. The basic curriculum is supplemented with other materials and manipulatives. The students complete daily review of math problems to begin each class. The curriculum allows for instruction of new skills and concepts along with continual review of previously learned material. Students work to master all of the basic math facts. Problem solving skills are also taught.
Enrichment: The enrichment class helps the special education students by teaching them IEP identified goals and objectives, re-teaching and pre-teaching lessons from the general education curriculum, and/or assisting them with class requirements. Enrichment classes are also provided to assist the students with organization and study skills. Students complete daily agendas to keep track of given assignments and due dates.
Life Skills Program: The 6-8th graders at Chief Kanim Middle School blend academic instruction, problem solving, communication, and social skills, and pre-vocational activities and hands-on projects, while meeting the goals and objectives of each student's IEP.
Students receive individualized instruction in reading, writing, and math according to their needs. The emphasis is on learning strategies, using graphic organizers, and other programs that will provide structure to the skills upon which the students are working. Real life activities such as reading schedules, directions, and recipes, writing notes, lists, thank you cards and letters, and measuring, calculation, and scheduling are incorporated into the academic program.
Through role playing, games, social stories and real life scenarios, students will learn problem solving, communication, and social skills. Chief Kanim also focuses on Thinking Skills, Thinking Behavior and a monthly Character Trait; these are incorporated into the curriculum when appropriate.
Pre-vocational activities and hands-on projects include year-round gardening (thanks to an outdoor greenhouse and indoor grow cart), cooking, photography, and crafts. The class is responsible for grocery shopping, ordering and stocking a pop machine, counting/and banking the proceeds from it, and budgeting classroom money for community experiences. Past trips have included visits to Sonicare, a bank, the police station, the Pacific Science Center, the Kirkland Performance Center and restaurants.
