School Board Renews Superintendent’s 3-Year Contract
The Board of Directors took action, during their regular meeting on April 4, to extend Superintendent Joel Aune’s contract with the Snoqualmie Valley School District. The four board members who were present voted unanimously to approve the contract. While Director Dan Popp was not able to attend the meeting, he expressed his support earlier that day. The new contract will span the next three years: 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20.
School Board President Geoff Doy said, “Looking at the needs of the District, with a number of significant projects and long-term initiatives aimed at improving teaching and learning, Mr. Aune’s tenure with our school district continues to be an asset. Our schools have made tremendous strides in recent years under his capable leadership, and I have no doubt that opportunities for students will continue to grow and improve, into the future.”
Before taking action on Aune's contract, the Board discussed the process they employ to evaluate the Superintendent's performance, and its relationship to the contract renewal. The process involved a self-evaluation based on established performance criteria and goals set the previous year, the perspective of staff, and assessment of performance as related to eight criteria, all of which was discussed at length by the Board. Doy added, “The Board was unanimous in its assessment, as Mr. Aune met or exceeded expectations in all areas of his evaluation. The process employed is more thorough than those I‘ve experienced in the private sector.”
Superintendent Aune added, “I appreciate the endorsement of the Board and look forward to continuing with the work that is underway to make our schools the best they can be. We have made significant improvements in the past ten years, due to a very supportive community and the efforts of our teachers, administrators, and support staff. The vision of the Board, their commitment to the pursuit of excellence, and the support they have provided has been instrumental in our success as a District. The energy here is extremely positive at this time with all of the great things occurring across the District. That said, there will always be room for improvement---we will continue to embrace the challenges and leverage opportunities to further strengthen our schools. I look forward to the great things that are yet to be accomplished here in the Snoqualmie Valley School District.”
Aune was named Superintendent of the Snoqualmie Valley School District in 2005. He is currently in his 12th year with the District and 34th year in education.
