Veterinary Science Team - Practicing for Future Careers!

  • In its second year at Mount Si High School, the Veterinary Science Team had their first competition this year at Ferndale High School last week, on March 16.  These are rigorous competitions which involve four practicums: Administering a subcutaneous injection, Restraint of the dog for cephalic venipuncture, Prescription filling, and Applying a nylon dog muzzle; and a Team Activity – Canine Parasite Prevention. Team members also had to complete identification tests (about animal breeds, parasites, vet tools), a written test, and a math test. Out of 17 teams in the competition, Mount Si placed eighth!

Congratulations to team members: Neela Berdan, Taylore Mallery, Bella Pinon, Elena Rourke, and Izzy Stover, all of whom expressed interest in pursuing careers as veterinarians. Pictured below, the Vet Science Team poses in their official scrubs and stethoscopes, with miniature horses Pearl and Jimmy, that are being trained as service animals, and sheep Clyde and Goose. (Taylore Mallery was not present in the photos.)

With the addition of the school’s newly-constructed barn and farm animals, Mount Si’s Agricultural Education department is continuing to expand its program and learning opportunities for students.  Agriculture Science Teacher Amy Graham shared that  students can now earn a Veterinary Assistant Certification at Mount Si High School, a requirement that involves 300 service hours. Best wishes Wildcats -- in your next competition March 30 in Stanwood, as well as for your exciting career aspirations!
