Important Rules to Remember!!Please help me get your child home safely! Whether your child rides the bus home, gets picked up or walks home, I will require him/her to follow that routine every day. The only way to have your child do something different is to have someone sign them out through the office, send me a signed note, or call the main office (not my voice mail) and tell them what you want them to do. This note/message may stipulate the change is for a single day or a series of days (e.g. every Thursday, or all week). This includes having someone else pick up your child. We need to know from you!! I will not accept your child or a sibling telling me “what you said”. Please make it easy on everyone and let us know about changes in a note or with a phone call. Help us keep your child safe. (Please let the person picking up your child know that they will need to have photo ID with them.) Thank you!
Did you know that your child may not bring any medication to school? Beyond the obvious, this means that your child may not bring aspirin or even cough drops to school. I am required to confiscate and turn in any such items to the office. If your child needs to take medications of any type at school, you need to follow the procedures outlined in the handbook that you received. You may also come to the office, request to see your child and administer the medication yourself.

Special homework assignments. There will be math homework pages, as well as, correct and returns.Mondays:
I update the Class News page late Sunday night. Please check that page on Mondays to find out what is happening in our classroom each week!
Snacks, Snacks, Snacks—Not this year! Our students go to lunch early enough that we do not need a morning snack. Please make sure that your child eats a nutritious breakfast before coming to school. You may also want to plan on an "after school" snack - especially in the first few weeks.
Birthdays! We love to celebrate birthdays! We try to acknowledge each child’s birthday on or as close as possible to their special day. We make each child a special birthday book and sing to them. We will not be doing "treats" from home. So I ask that you not send in birthday treats.
Should you be planning an outside celebration for your child that would include only a few of their classmates, please arrange to send all invitations outside of school. This helps to prevent hurt feelings and embarrassment for your child as they try to explain why some children did not get “chosen”. (It is also a school-wide rule.)
Summer birthdays will be acknowledged on or as close to their half-birthday as possible. (July birthdays in January. August birthdays in February.) This is our way of making sure that everyone gets their own special day.
If you have any questions or concerns about birthdays be sure to contact me.
BEARS NotebooksThe B.E.A.R.S. folder is a folder that your first grader will use everyday to develop organizational skills and learn responsibility. First grade is a good time to teach children how to keep up with homework, tests, and important papers. This folder is a way of easing them into these responsibilities. It aims to eliminate lost notes, newsletters and homework as well as keep parents and students informed of important events and academic progress. So, if you want to know what all the latest “beary important news” is in our class, check out your child’s B.E.A.R.S. folder! (Students will receive their B.E.A.R.S. folder after Curriculum Night. We will discuss these folders with parents in depth during the Curriculum Night presentation. Hope to see you there!)
Here’s what you’ll find inside:
The Important Pouch:
From time to time, you may need to send money or important notes to school. Please use this pouch for those important items. I will encourage the children to check it everyday.
Each week your child will receive a homework slip to place in the first pocket divider. Your child should complete the section for each day (with your help) and return the homework slip to this spot. I will be doing a quick visual check of their progress on their homework every day. Then on Friday morning, your child will remove their homework slip, share it with the class, and turn it in.
Check this section for a monthly calendar of events.
There is a copy of our specialist schedule in the folder to help you and your child plan for the day.
See Who’s In Our Room:
This section has a list of the first names of all of the students in our class. Your child may need this list for Valentine’s Day. (I may not release last names, phone numbers or addresses due to privacy issues.)
I hope that the B.E.A.R.S. folder contains everything your child will need to be ready for school everyday. Encourage your child to become more independent by being responsible for putting the B.E.A.R.S. folder in their backpack every night before bed. This will help to create a calm and relaxed trip to school and a confident first grader who will be prepared to start the day off right.
I want to thank PTA for providing the funds for each first grader to have this folder.
