In the library we focus on literacy skills recommended by the American Association of School Librarians and the Common Core appropriate for third grade.  There is a link on the Welcome Page of this site.  Students will also be learning how the library is organized, how to access the computer catalog to search for a book and how to use the library respectfully.

Third grade students are invited to take out three books per week. They are encouraged to renew books that they cannot finish.  If they have a book overdue, they should not be taking another book home until that one returns or is renewed.
Third grade students  are introduced throughout the year to the Washington Children's Choice Picture books (WCCPB) (http://childrenschoiceaward.wikispaces.com/)   as well as many other favorites.  We have shared 11 of the 20 titles so far this year.  They vote for their favorite one in March.  Using these books I organize a Battle first within each classroom and then the winning team from each class will challenge the best team from the other third grades in the building.  Last year we had excellent teams overall with two teams acheiving a co- championship.   Congratulations to Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Melgaard, who will be sharing the trophy again this year.

I focus on literacy skills recommended by the American Association of School Librarians and the Common Core appropriate for third grade.   We may use the same books as the younger students, however we will be using standards that are grade appropriate.  The William C. Towner Non-Fiction Book Nominees http://http://towneraward.wikispaces.com/.   These books are chosen each year to give the students examples of rich non- fiction text. and are good examples to use when working on Common Core Information Text skills.  They vote for the one they think is the best in April.  Students will also be learning how the library is organized, how to access the computer catalog to search for a book and how to use the library respectfully.

If you would like to come in before school and check out books, you as a parent can get an account with us.
The School District pays for World Book Online for us to use at school and for you to use at home.  It is multi-leveled encyclopedia.  The Early World of Learning would be great for kindergartners.   You can access it quickly through the school district website- Student Resources or through the Library Catalog Home page via this library website.  You must have a password to access it from home.  Please email me for the code.
