    Seal of Biliteracy

    What is the Seal of Biliteracy?

    The Washington State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in one or more world languages in addition to English. "Participating school districts with students eligible to receive the seal shall place a notation on a student's high school diplom and high school transcript indicating that the student has earned the seal."  (RCW 28A.230.125)  The seal formally recognizes students that demonstrate:

     

    • Proficiency in English
      • Passed ELA state assessment
      • Met ELA graduation requirements
    • Proficiency in a language other than English
      • Earned intermediate-mid level proficiency or higher through the World Language Credit Program
      • Scored three or higher on an AP language exam
      • Passed an International Baccalaureate (IB) exam with a score of four or higher

    Who is eligible for the seal? 

    • Heritage/Bilingual speakers who meet the criteria.
    • Students who have lived abroad and acquired reading, writing and speaking skills in a language other than English.
    • Students who have learned a language in a coursework environment who meet the requirements.

    How will students obtain the Seal of Biliteracy and be recognized?

    The student's transcript and diploma will be marked with the Washington State Seal of Biliteracy as a statement of accoomplishment, signaling the student's readiness for career and college and to engage as a global citizen.

    • Heritage/Bilingual speaking students in grades 8 through 12 may qualify by testing through the World Language Credit Program, which also enables students to earn high school credits towards graduation.
    • Students who qualify through an AP or IB exam should see their school counselor to request the Seal of Biliteracy.
