Fiber Arts Students Learn New Skills Through Foundation Grant
The grant funded supplies for students in grades 6 through 10 to explore a variety of fiber arts techniques, including knitting, crocheting, weaving, sewing, felting, and other related crafts. The classes introduce students to hands-on artistic processes while also teaching them about different fibers, materials, and the cultural and historical traditions connected to these crafts.
This spring, students began a knitting unit using new knitting needles purchased through the grant. For many students, it was their first experience learning to knit. During class, students practiced holding needles, creating their first stitches, and building confidence as they developed a brand-new skill.
Students in Meadowbrook School's Fiber Arts class learn the fundamentals of knitting using supplies funded through a Snoqualmie Valley Schools Foundation grant.
"Learning fiber arts gives students the opportunity to slow down, focus, and experience the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands," said teacher Jill Wendlick. "The Foundation's support has allowed us to provide quality materials and introduce students to skills and traditions they may not have otherwise had the chance to explore."
As students worked through their first knitting lesson, they demonstrated patience and perseverance while tackling an unfamiliar skill. Despite dropped stitches and tangled yarn, students remained engaged and eager to learn, encouraging one another as they practiced the fundamentals of knitting.

The Fiber Arts program encourages creativity, patience, problem-solving, and perseverance while giving students opportunities to express themselves through a variety of artistic mediums. As students continue through the course, they will build upon these foundational skills and create projects that showcase their growing craftsmanship and creativity.
