SNAP Program Update Related to Government Shutdown
Update on SNAP Benefits (Source: OSPI as of 11-5-25)
As anticipated, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were suspended on November 1 for the 42 million Americans who rely on this food support. In response to two judges’ orders to use the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) emergency fund to sustain benefits during the federal government funding gap, on Monday, the Trump Administration announced that SNAP would be partially funded in November. Various reports indicate that, for most people, benefits will be cut in half. USDA has said that it could take weeks or even months for the reduced benefits to reach people.
Since we recognize the hardship this may cause, we’ve gathered some local resources, tips and services available at this time (below), to help students and families dealing with food scarcity in our own Snoqualmie Valley community.
If you're aware of other local resources, free meals or food drives to add to this information, please email details to: svsdinfo@svsd410.org.

Washington State
Department of Social & Health Services (DSHS):
Status of School Meals:
No Changes to School Lunches & Breakfasts
Some questions have been raised about the impacts of the federal government shutdown on school meal programs. Fortunately, the SNAP program is separate from the federal Free & Reduced Price School Meal Program funding, which reimburses public school districts for providing student meals at low cost or free of charge to families who qualify. According to our state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), the USDA extended the federal school meal program funding through Dec. 31. So at this time, OSPI does not anticipate disruptions to school meal reimbursements from the USDA or food fulfillment/distribution to schools, through the end of the calendar year. We will keep families apprised if anything changes.
Does Your Family Qualify for Free School Meals?
Eligible students in our district can receive free and reduced-price breakfasts and lunches by completing the Free & Reduced Price Meal Application for the 2025-26 school year. Those who qualified last year need to reapply each school year.
Learn if your family’s income qualifies your student(s): OSPI Meal Application & Verification webpage.
Families can apply at any time throughout the year, so don’t delay if your household circumstances should unexpectedly change. (For example, are you impacted by work furloughs due to the government shutdown?)
Tips for SNAP Customers
Suggestions:
- Check with your local churches and community organizations that may be hosting food drives, serving meals, or providing food assistance.
- Start meal planning now and take inventory of the foods you currently have.
- With remaining October food benefits, prioritize shelf-stable, bulk, and low-cost items. * Note that any unused benefits will roll over and only expire after 274 days of EBT card inactivity.
Use Additional SNAP Programs:
If you have a remaining balance on your EBT card, you can participate in the following SNAP programs to receive additional benefits for fresh fruits & vegetables. Click on each title below for the Dept. of Health website information about each program:
🍐 SNAP Produce Match - Buy $10 of fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables with your EBT card at participating grocery stores and receive a $5 produce coupon.
💵 SNAP Market Match - Visit a participating farmers market or farm stand to receive SNAP Market Match dollars. Simply visit the information booth and swipe your EBT card for the amount you’d like to spend. Participating markets will match $25 or more per day in Market Match dollars for you to spend on produce.
⚕️Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program - The Washington State Department of Health’s Fruit and Vegetable Prescription (FV Rx) Program works with health care centers in Washington to prescribe fruits and vegetables to patients who are food insecure. Patients receive paper vouchers valued at $250-$500 over six months, redeemable at Safeway stores. Click on the subheading, to find out if you qualify.
If you have any unused benefits from any of these programs, you can still redeem them during the month of November. (Source: Mary's Place, a Seattle non-profit that supports people experiencing homelessness)

How You Can Help:
Already strained food banks and local emergency food programs are working hard to do more with less – because of funding cuts under federal legislation known as H.R. 1. More than ever, local organizations focused on eliminating hunger need donations and volunteer support to respond to the ever-increasing needs throughout our communities. Any and all donations to local services are greatly appreciated!
