Poetry Slam Amplifies Student Voice & Creativity

Mount Si High School’s 11th Annual Poetry Slam captivated a packed library Nov. 20, celebrating the power of student voice and perspectives through original poetry.

This event is the culmination of weeks of study in AP Literature classes, where teachers Chelsea Brandon and Dan Mancoff guide 120 students from analyzing verse to crafting their own authentic poems. The result?  Expressive, confident poets ready to share their stories.

“It’s one of the best days of the year and always leaves people feeling uplifted about our students—and the future with students leading the way,” said Mancoff.

Over three days, students performed individual and group pieces in front of their peers, who listened with respect and empathy. The atmosphere was filled with snapping fingers, laughter, and heartfelt applause. After several rounds of spirited competition, one team of poets emerged as the 2025 Slam Champions!

Congratulations to “Run the Mic,” whose team members Alyssa Bergquist, Dylan Colis, Emily Rodriguez, and Mimi Theroux now hold a place in Wildcat history, with their as recipients of the prestigious AP Lit Poetry Slam Award.

Here’s what participants and audience members had to say during the final round:

  • “I was terrified to present, but I’m so glad I did. It was really fun!” — Student from the winning team
  • “I think it’s a great idea to involve freshmen so they can know what it’s like and look forward to participating.” — Freshman judge
  • “I feel that way too.” — Student, snapping fingers in agreement
  • “I love poetry now and absolutely plan to continue writing after this!” — Student reflecting on the experience

All student clubs (such as Poetry Club) and athletics, and many elective classes and Advanced Placement courses (such as AP Literature) receive funding through our district’s Educational Programs and Operations Levy. We are grateful to our community for supporting Snoqualmie Valley schools and opportunities that help every student thrive!
