Water Quality Testing for Lead in Drinking Water

The health and safety of our students and the school community is a top priority for the Snoqualmie Valley School District (SVSD).

To protect public health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established standards for lead in drinking water. If lead is found at any drinking water outlet in a school above 15 parts per billion (ppb), the EPA recommends taking action to reduce concentrations.

In addition, the Washington State Department of Health requires that schools built before 2016 be tested for the presence of lead. SVSD follows RCW 28A.210.410, which sets a more protective threshold of 5 ppb for taking action. These thresholds are not measures of health effects but serve as signals to take steps that reduce lead levels in drinking water.

SVSD has implemented a water quality testing program for drinking water fixtures districtwide. All fixtures are tested for lead content using the standards outlined in RCW 28A.210.410. Whenever results show lead levels above 5 ppb, signage is posted to inform students and staff not to drink the water until remediation efforts are completed and follow-up testing confirms the lead levels are below 5 ppb. If levels exceed 15 ppb, the water is shut off completely until remediation efforts are completed and follow-up testing confirms the lead levels are below 5 ppb.
