One-to-One Handbook
Our community has strongly supported the Snoqualmie Valley School District (SVSD) by approving several technology levies over the past decade. The most recent Technology Levy, passed in February 2022, funds a One-to-One Device program for all students, preparing them for college, career, and citizenship.
This program provides take-home devices for secondary students and classroom carts for elementary students, ensuring equal access to learning materials and real-time engagement. The devices enable research, collaboration, content creation, and other future-ready skills.
The One-to-One Device program aims to enhance engagement, provide a safer online environment, support diverse learning approaches, and extend learning beyond the classroom.
Components of a One-to-One Program
Why Provide Students with a Laptop?
By issuing all students the same laptop model, the district aims to ensure equitable technology access and learning opportunities. Students will use these laptops at school and home, enhancing online safety, classroom instruction, and tech support. This initiative extends learning beyond school hours and fosters collaboration.
The district will provide secure access to resources and curriculum, promoting student engagement. With the growing use of technology in classrooms, these laptops offer a cohesive platform for continued growth.
When Will Laptops Be Issued?
Students receive a Windows device upon entering middle school or when they enroll in SVSD as a new secondary student. All K-5 students have access to a Chromebook in their classroom.
Use and Care of the Device
Best Practices
Although a device is checked out to each individual student, each device is owned by the district. Students must use the devices ethically, legally, and efficiently for learning. Violating the rules leads to disciplinary action. Follow these best practices for use and care:
- Never leave a device unattended or unprotected in your locker, vehicle, or a public place. If you must leave it unattended in a vehicle, make sure it is out of sight such as in the trunk of the car.
- If the device is in a locker or car, make sure it is locked and secured.
- Charge your device fully every night.
- Store your device on a desk, table, or in your backpack, not on the floor.
- Protect it from extreme temperatures, food, drink, small children, and pets.
- Use the provided sleeve when carrying it.
- Be careful with devices in your backpack, especially when adding heavy books.
- If traveling with the device, you are responsible for any theft or damage.

Defective or Damaged Devices
Students must report software issues or laptop damage to the school library or media center. Staff will examine and, if needed, send the laptop for repair. Students will receive a replacement device. The Technology Department will assess and repair the laptop, noting any negligence and reporting it to the school administration, which may result in fines for the student.
If a stylus fails within two weeks of receiving it, the district will replace it. After two weeks, students are responsible for replacing it at their own cost. The district offers styluses and chargers at each school or
students can also purchase them online, but we cannot guarantee functionality of online purchases. See svsd.tech/fines for the current replacement costs.
Other Prohibited Actions
- Do not deface district equipment (e.g., marking, painting, drawing, or marring).
- Avoid using permanent stickers or markings on devices and accessories.
- Do not loan your device or its components; you are responsible for any loss or damage.
- Do not attempt to download or install unauthorized software.
- Do not modify the device’s operating system or attempt to run or install another operating system.
- Do not alter browser settings or use techniques to bypass content filters. Do not disable anti-malware protections or try to alter access restrictions to the device.
Warranty Coverage
All district technology is purchased with a three year warranty to cover manufacturer-related issues. These repairs typically are the failure of internal and external parts due to normal usage. Whenever there is a repair covered under warranty, there is no charge to the student/guardian.
Any issues that are not covered by warranty fall into one of these five categories: Accidental, Negligence, Gross Negligence, Lost, or Stolen.
Non-Warranty Coverage
Process of Repair or Replacement
The following are general guidelines to follow when assessing student laptops for damage. A District computer technician or librarian will determine the level of damage and approximate repair amount. The school administration will then determine which category the damage falls into: Accidental, Negligence, or Gross Negligence.
Accidental
If there is accidental damage, the student must report it to the library or media center immediately.
When it has been determined the damage is accidental, there is no charge to get the device repaired.
Examples
- Minor Case Chip — These types of chips may be repaired and returned to the student.
- One or two keys missing — If determined they came off from normal wear and tear, there is no charge to fix.
Negligence/ Gross Negligence
If there is damage, the student must report it to the library or media center immediately. An investigation will be conducted by the school administration and/or Technology Department. If the damage to the device is deemed negligence or gross negligence, the student/guardian will be subject to the repair cost or the cost of replacing the device. This is applicable if you are negligent with your device or if you purposefully damage another student’s device.
Examples
- Many keys missing — If determined the student deliberately removed the keys, the cost will be the replacement of the keyboard.
- Screen cracked, scratched or shattered — There will be a cost for replacement of the screen.
Lost
If a device is lost, the student/guardian must report it to the library or media center immediately. The student/guardian will be billed the cost of replacing the device. The district will provide a replacement device to the student as soon as possible. The replacement device may not be the same make/model as the lost device.
Stolen
The student and/or guardian must file a police report and a copy must be provided to the library or media center as soon as possible. If the device was deemed to be stolen, and the student was not negligent, any fines will be removed from the student’s account and the district will cover the cost of the replacement. A student making a false report may be subject to disciplinary action.
