Tech tips while learning from home - for students and parents

During this time of school closure we are all relying on technology to keep our students and teachers connected.  We are grateful that all SMS students last fall received laptops for classroom and home use as part of the one-to-one device program.  With those devices in mind, we are compling helpful tips.  If you are having additional tech issues, contact our school secretary to be directed to someone that can help!

Sound and Microphone issues?

Students should open the camera app on their device and see if they can record a video with sound to their device.   If the answer is yes, the issue is in the browser not the device.  Try these steps to fix the issue:

        1. Click on the circle in the upper right
        2. Make sure you are logged in to Chrome using your district account and Sync is turned ON.
        3. Click on the 3 dots in the upper left of Chrome
        4. Click settings, click Site Settings, choose Microphone
        5. Make sure there are no sites under the blocked area. If there are, use the trash can to remove them. If the site you are trying to use is under Allow, try clicking the trash can to remove and then restart the browser. Then navigate back to the site and re-allow the site access to the microphone.

If the answer is no or they get an error then the student device needs to be reset.

To reset a student's device email SVSD tech staff from the student's district email account and ask for a reset.  If students do not know how to access their student email they can go to gmail.com and login with their district info.  Remind students they will need to check their school email to see a response for instructions on when the device will be reset remotely.

 

Is the sound issue in a Microsoft Teams call? 

All students should be using the app and not the web browser.  Students should download the Microsoft Teams app from the Microsoft Store.  Again, do not use the web brower.  Here are student instructions on how to join a Microsoft Teams call (also posted on Schoology).  If microphones do not work in Microsoft Teams, make sure students are using the app and not the web browser.

 

 

Replacement parts: My student lost their stylus or charging cord. 

You can purchase a replacement stylus from Amazon or other technology vendors.  Here are links to ones that will work with the device:
