In the spring, our Principal team of Mrs. Botulinski and Mrs. Lawrence planned to visit the elementary schools to give information about SMS and welcome you to 6th grade, as well as meet with parents. But this spring, our outreach will be virtual instead! To welcome you, they narrated a presentation and made a video about what the first day is like for our incoming 6th grade families. Watch here!
One of our favorite transition activities is providing a school tour to our incoming 6th graders and their families. Unfortunately, due to the school closure this year, we are unable to do this. So, we thought we could bring the tour to you!
Please download our school map to follow Mr. Coulon, Mrs. Lawrence, Mrs. Botulinski and Winston, our beloved SMS therapy dog, as they guide you through the grounds of SMS. The virtual tour lasts about 9 minutes. We begin at the main entrance, show you the interior areas of our building, as well as gym, portables, athletic fields, and bus loop. We end by visiting two classrooms.
Hopefully this virtual tour will help provide you with the context for what SMS looks like when your first day of school arrives.
Have you received our parent emails about 6th grade at SMS? We have your parent email address if your student attended CVES or SES. Otherwise, please add yourself below. We regularly email our parents, post on Facebook and update the school website to keep you informed. Questions? Please contact Head Secretary, Betsy Evensen.
Your student will be enrolled automatically in the following year-long classes for next school year: science, language arts, math, and social studies. All 6th grade students have 6 class periods per day: 4 required core classes, 1 required PE/Health class, and 1 exploratory pathway of their choosing.
Incoming 6th graders choose one year-long exploratory pathway from two options: Music or Exploratory Rotation. Music pathway: music students will choose between Band or Choir as a year-long course. For students not taking Band of Choir, they take an Exploratory Rotation of four quarter-long courses: Art, Coding, Digital Media, and Music & Movement.
If your student did not already select their exploratory pathway or you are new to SMS, please contact Registrar Angela Krpata.
