Safety message from Principal Botulinski: Hwy 202 safety plus drop-off, pick-up and tardy procedures during inclement weather

Safety Message about Hwy 202, and more, from Principal Botulinski

I want to take a moment to remind everyone about our pick-up and drop-off procedures, especially when our weather and road conditions are poor. As always, our goal is to encourage a smooth and safe arrival for all.

Doors Open and Tardy Impacts during Inclement Weather
Normally doors to SMS open at 7:15 a.m. Students who arrive earlier can wait in the covered areas near the entrances to school. With school delays, we will open doors 15 minutes prior to the adjusted start of school (i.e., 2 hour delay = 9:30 a.m. start, doors open at 9:15 a.m.).

The bell rings at 7:30 a.m. and any student arriving past 7:35 a.m. is considered tardy and must check-in at the front office window. (Parents/guardians will also receive an auto-generated email from Skyward indicating the tardy. Call 425-831-8450 to excuse the tardy)

We recognize that poor road conditions and canceled bus routes put a strain on arrival times. During unique times, we modify the above tardy practice and do not take attendance until very late into 1st period and send students right to class upon arrival. We hope the additional time helps everyone arrive safely to school.

Vehicle Drop-Off Procedures
I try to stand at the front curb of the drop-off loop every morning by 7:15 AM to direct traffic and provide a safe crossing for students walking through the parking lot. Please pull forward as far as you can and fill-up the entire front loop with cars to keep the process moving.
If you drop your student off in the middle section of our parking lot, please encourage them to wait on the grassy area across from me until I motion for them to cross safely.

Important Hwy 202 safety reminders
If you pick-up your child at the end of the day, please do not stop your car in the middle of Hwy 202 and allow them to enter your car. Student pick-up and drop-off must occur within the SMS front loop and parking lot, with no exceptions. We realize traffic congestion occurs on a regular basis, and waiting is frustrating, but it is imperative to NOT have students running through traffic on HWY 202. We appreciate your cooperation as we prioritize the safety of all students, at all times.

If your child walks or rides a bike to school, or walks to a bus stop, please remind them to never run across busy roads, only cross in designated crossings following traffic signals, and carefully look for oncoming traffic, especially when it is dark.

Are you getting texts and phone calls about delays and closures?
Finally, please review all of the ways you can receive important emergency alerts and bus delay notices. Click here for a summary of how to stay informed: SVSD Emergency Communication webpage. This past week, SVSD posted information on district and school home pages, social media, emails, phone calls, and text messages so please make sure you are receiving this important information in the best format for you.

We cannot thank you enough for your continued partnership.

Sincerely,

Megan Botulinski
