TEALS Volunteers Needed for the 2018-19 School Year

Dear Parents, Guardians and Alums,

We have a wonderful opportunity to continue our partnership with TEALS to bring computer science courses to our students again next year. TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) is a program that recruits, mentors, and places passionate high tech professionals into high school classes as volunteer instructors and teaching assistants. Computer science experts bring valuable content knowledge and mentorship to Mount Si High School and join our classroom teachers in a team-teaching model. TEALS provides training for both parties as well as course outlines based on successful college courses.

Mount Si High School has been approved to continue offering TEALS for the 2018-19 school year. Multiple courses will be offered, including Introduction to Computer Science, Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles, and Advanced Placement Computer Science A.

  • Introduction to Computer Science is based on the award-winning UC Berkeley CS10 course and is adapted specifically for high schools.
  • Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (bit.ly/MSHSAPCSPVideo) introduces students to the creative aspects of computer programming, cybersecurity concerns, and how computing and technology impact the world.
  • Advanced Placement Computer Science A (bit.ly/MSHSAPCSAVideo) is modeled after the University of Washington’s acclaimed CSE-142 course, teaching students the fundamentals of procedural and object-oriented programming with Java. Both AP courses prepare students for the College Board’s AP Exams in the spring of 2019.

Mount Si High School needs volunteers from the Computer Science or Software Engineering fields to team-teach these courses with our teacher(s). Mount Si High School will hold courses that utilize volunteers at the start of the school day to permit members of our team to get to their regular jobs.

If you, or someone you know, works in the Computer Science or Software Engineering field and would like to join our Computer Science program, please contact Kyle Warren at warrenk@svsd410.org. You can read more about TEALS on their website at http://www.tealsk12.org.

We are excited about this opportunity and look forward to hearing from you!
