Introducing the New Snoqualmie Middle School Principal
Doug Burnham has been hired as principal of Snoqualmie Middle School. In July, he will join the Snoqualmie Valley School District to plan for the re-opening of Snoqualmie Middle School in the fall of 2019. He is currently the Career and Technical Education (CTE) director at Tahoma School District, and an associate principal at Tahoma High School.
Burnham emerged as the top candidate after a thorough interview process that narrowed a strong pool of approximately 29 applicants, down to four finalists. These finalists were invited for daylong interviews with middle school staff, principals from other Snoqualmie Valley schools, and district administrators. At the April 3 School Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved the appointment of Burnham to this important leadership role.
Superintendent Joel Aune and the School Board welcomed Doug Burnham
to the Snoqualmie Valley School District, at the April 3 board meeting.
Burnham’s career in education spans 20 years with administrative positions at Tahoma, Auburn and Enumclaw school districts for the past 8 years. Most recently, he has been the CTE director for Tahoma School District and Tahoma High School associate principal for five years—during which he helped facilitate significant changes related to transitioning staff and students to a new scheduling model and opening a new school. Burnham also has middle school teaching experience in the subject areas of special education, math, science, and digital exploration at schools in Issaquah and Kent. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, as well as his principal certification, from Central Washington University.
“Mr. Burnham’s experience as a middle school science and math teacher, a special education/behavior intervention specialist, and middle school assistant principal make him well-suited for the SMS principalship. Through a deep and thorough reference check process, we learned that he is held in the highest regard in the Tahoma school community. He is bright-minded, hardworking, and brings a set of skills and experiences that are in strong alignment with our needs at this time. We also see Mr. Burnham as a significant ‘value-add’ to the leadership team, especially the secondary principals and assistant principals. I believe we have landed a really good one here, and look forward to bringing Mr. Burnham on board as part of our leadership team,” said Superintendent Aune.
“I am excited to accept the position of principal at Snoqualmie Middle School and look forward to getting to know students, staff and the community. It is an honor to be a part of this historic time in the District – to reopen a great middle school, that will serve Snoqualmie Valley students and families for years to come,” said Burnham.
As principal, his role for the next school year (2018-19) will focus on planning and preparation for helping the District transition from two to three middle schools by the fall of 2019. At that time, the current Mount Si Freshman Campus building will be converted back into Snoqualmie Middle School, under Burnham’s leadership as head principal. This timing, fall of 2019, coincides with the opening of the new Mount Si High School which will serve all students in grades 9-12.
While this position will officially begin July 1, Burnham will also be involved in Middle School Visioning Committee work this spring.
Please join the District in extending a warm welcome to Doug Burnham as the next Snoqualmie Middle School principal.
