2018 Battle of the Books District Champions
Congratulations to Snoqualmie Elementary School, whose “Legion of Bananas” team won the 2018 Battle of the Books District Championship. All six Snoqualmie Valley elementary schools participated in the exciting annual reading contest that culminated at North Bend Elementary School on April 27.

Battle of the Books is an annual tradition, available to all Snoqualmie Valley elementary schools, which inspires hundreds of students in grades 3-5 to read. Participants read a selection of 12 books that the elementary librarians collectively choose and announce the previous summer. Students form teams and compete at their school each spring, by answering questions about details in the stories – similar to a team Jeopardy competition. Through several elimination rounds, one team emerges as their school champion. The top team from each elementary school advances to the District Championship event where they represent their school and match their skills against other top contenders. Through a round of 40 questions, involving an intense show of teamwork, concentration and literary comprehension, the highest scoring team earns the coveted trophy and bragging rights as District Champs.
Congratulations to all participants for their hours of reading, impressive recall of details, and good sportsmanship. Below are the top teams from the other five schools, presented alphabetically by school:
Cascade View Elementary’s team, the Bernardo Book Bandits, included (left to right):

Representing North Bend Elementary, from the Bookworm$ team, included:
Isaac Aguilar, Matthew Talbot, Eliza McDonald, Avery Pynn (in back) and Dallen Jensen.
NBES librarians are Lisa Radmer and Nancy Flanagan.
Opstad Elementary’s team, named The Hidden, included: Damian Dunn (captain),
Cody Jimenez, Julian Cabrera, Henry Soltys and Reggie Danshita,
pictured with OES Librarians Amy Bonner and Nancy Huestis.
From Timber Ridge Elementary, the Whomping Willows team included:
Mirha Shakil, Siena Nelson, Hannah Chen, Chloe Chong and Logan Green.
The TRES librarian is Amy Soltys.
Watch for the 2019 book list, which will be made available by all the school librarians before school is out. By reading this summer, students can start early preparing for next year’s battle!
