Mount Si Students Compete in International Robotics Event

Congratulations to Mount Si High School juniors Hari Rathnam and Manjesh Puram who competed in the GENIUS Olympiad, an international high school project competition about environmental issues. As finalists in the Robotics competition, they finished 6th out of 46 teams, and earned a silver medal. The event, took place at State University in Oswego, New York, last summer, and attracted over 1,200 participants from 29 different countries.

Finalist in the GENIUS Olympiad robotics competition

Hari Rathnam and Manjesh Puram, Mount Si juniors, earned silver medals in robotics

at the 2018 GENIUS Olympiad competition in New York.

The GENIUS Olympiad hosts projects in five general disciplines with an environmental focus:

  • Science provides understanding and solutions to environmental problems using scientific knowledge.
  • Visual and Performance Arts heightens public concern for environmental problems and solutions.
  • Business raises awareness of environmental values and social responsibility in the business world.
  • Creative Writing raises awareness about environmental problems, calling us to action on solutions.
  • Robotics provides engineering and automation solutions to resolve given environmental issues.

Genius Robotics is a student-centric competition which provides students an understanding of the role of engineering and research in environmental issues. It encourages students to discover novel solutions to known problems in the environment by requiring them to design, build, test and control their unique robots. It also builds life skills such as being a team member, researching and problem-solving. Specifically, the robotics competition involved designing and programming robots to retrieve objects from the field, sorting them and placing them in various bins. Through five rounds of competition, Puram and Rathnam’s robot performed well in both the autonomous category of competition, as well as in driver-controlled mode.  Visit the GENIUS Olympiad website (https://geniusolympiad.org/) to learn more.

As part of the trip, the students also represented Mount Si High School during visits

to east coast colleges including: Columbia University, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute

of Technology (MIT), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Worchester Polytechnic Institute.

Are you interested in Robotics?  For students who want to learn more about robotics at Mount Si High School, the Robotics Club meets at the Freshman Campus in room 920 on Thursday afternoons (2:40 – 4 p.m.) and Sunday mornings (9 a.m. – noon).  All students (grades 9-12) are welcome; no experience is necessary. Participants experience and learn a variety of skills including computer programming, technical writing, CAD modeling, public speaking, 3D printing, marketing, micro-electronics, and leadership. (On October 25, the Robotics Club is planning a field trip to visit Zetec Inc. in Snoqualmie.) For more information, contact Robotics Club Advisor and Computer Science teacher Kyle Warren at warrenk@svsd410.org.
