Family Literacy Night at Opstad Elementary School on March 7 featured a variety of fun activities that encouraged family reading time. Students engaged in a camping-themed rotation of activities that included literacy games, relay races, campfire songs, a camping craft, “read alouds” family time, star gazing, and a s’mores snack station.
Scaredy Squirrel was also a special guest for the evening. He is a well-known storybook character who has a series of popular children's books -- one of which involves him camping. To fit the camping theme, children were also invited to wear pajamas or an Opstad t-shirt, and bring a flashlight for family reading time.
Principal Ryan Hill explained, “We had over 400 kids and parents/guardians attend along with 19 staff volunteering to run the rotations, games, reading time, etc. It was a great community-building event!”
