AVID Family Night Promotes College and Career Readiness

Mount Si High School’s AVID Family Night introduced many families to the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program and how it supports the district’s mission of helping all students prepare for college, careers and life readiness.  AVID focuses on closing the achievement gap by preparing students for college and setting them up for success throughout their careers.  AVID uses proven strategies to instill study skills, foster peer support, provide consistent teacher relationships, and help build the students’ confidence to pursue their aspirations after graduation.

On October 24, families gathered in Mount Si’s new Freshman Campus building to hear student leader McKenzie Cooper share her story with the group of adults and student peers, and how the AVID program is making a positive difference for her high school experience and plans after high school.  In addition to learning about AVID, families pledged their support through the AVID Contract, got better acquainted, encouraged each other, and had fun taking selfies at the AVID photo station.

The Snoqualmie Valley School District currently supports 12 AVID classes that include a total of 293 students and 11 dedicated AVID teachers. There are six AVID classes at Mount Si High School (in all grade levels). And, there are six middle school classes -- two at each school for grades 7 and 8 at TFMS, CKMS and SMS (added this year).
