Mount Si Students Start 2 New Clubs: Black Student Union & Diversity Club

Mount Si High School students have started two new clubs this year: the Black Student Union and the Diversity Club.  Student leaders, who took the initiative to start these clubs over the summer, introduce their groups below.  All MSHS students are invited to join the clubs through Instagram; see details below on how to join.

Black Student Union:

MSHS Senior Ahlam Khaleefa shared this information about the Black Student Union, which was formed on July 25, 2020. “After the Black Lives Matter Movement began gaining momentum back in June, Sena Birka, a current sophomore at Mount Si, Nyegai Wadar, a current junior at Mount Si, and I felt it was imperative for us to form a Black Student Union as we felt we weren't doing enough to dismantle racism and discrimination within our community.

The Black Student Union was founded to serve as a forum for communication amongst diverse students and faculty. Through discussions and guest speakers, Black Student Union hopes to involve the community in its efforts to attain respect for cultural diversity and peaceful coexistence, in the interests of Mount Si High School students, concentrating on the Black/African-American community. The purpose of the Black Student Union (BSU) is to serve as a liaison primarily between students of African descent (and other minorities) and the faculty and staff at Mount Si High School. We aim to advocate the needs of students in this institution while empowering, teaching, discussing, and exploring the Black experience. Through events and discussions, Black Student Union hopes to engage the community in efforts to promote cultural diversity and peaceful coexistence of multicultural groups at Mount Si High School. The goal of this club is to provide students with an opportunity to engage in activities and discussions designed to help foster a better understanding of experiences and issues that impact African-American students. This club is open to all students regardless of grade level, racial and/or cultural differences. This club welcomes diversity as it provides a table for rich discussion, understanding, and acceptance. The club is student governed with faculty supervision and encouragement.

Currently, this club is open to Mount Si High School students. However, we are planning on extending our club to Two Rivers High School, the middle and the elementary schools. As of right now, we have 17 members signed up to be a part of the Black Student Union.”

The first virtual meeting of the Black Student Union was Wednesday, September 23 at 1:30 p.m. Students can join by following them on Instagram @mshsblackstudentunion. Interested students will find more information and updates, and can fill out the Google form in the club’s bio. The Black Student Union advisor is Ken Williams.

Diversity Club:

MSHS Senior Aileen Cha is president of the Diversity Club.  She explained they “created this Diversity Club about 3 months ago because of a student forum that was centered around issues of racial equity at our school. As many students voiced their opinions on the racial climate and what it is like to be a student of color at Mount Si during this forum, it was clear that Mount Si High School's culture needed improvement in regards to making sure our students of color felt safe and represented. Our club's goal is to help students and staff celebrate the cultural diversity that exists at our school. Diversity Club is open to all students of all grade levels, regardless of their race. We will be hosting watch parties for anti-racist movies and documentaries, hold more student forums, dedicate a month just for students to come to our meetings and share their cultural background with their peers, and much more.

The next Diversity Club meeting is on Monday, October 5 at 3:25 p.m. Students just need to follow their Instagram @mshsdiversityclub to get the Zoom link to join their meetings and get updates from our club. MSHS teacher Rebecca Woodbury is the Diversity Club advisor.
