Knowledge Bowl Competes Online in Midwest Academic Challenge

Mount Si High School's Knowledge Bowl academic club recently participated in their first competition of this year. The teams represented the only school from Washington State participating in an online Midwest Academic Challenge -- a first for Mount Si students.

Due to the pandemic, the Puget Sound Education Service District (PSESD), which normally schedules the regional and state Knowledge Bowl competitions for Washington State, decided not to have them this year, due to equity issues with trying to set up an online competition. So, Mount Si Science Teacher and Knowledge Bowl Coach Kevin Knowles looked for other opportunities to offer his Knowledge Bowl teams who have been practicing virtually.

“We decided to try our very first online competition with teams outside of our own state in a regional competition with other high school teams from the Midwest called the Central and Western Academic Challenge hosted by Questions Unlimited.  I want to give my kids major kudos for being the only western high school team to participate and for their openness to compete in this unique questioning competition as compared to our usual format,” explained Knowles.

Kudos to Mount Si’s Knowledge Bowl team members:

Team A:

Kinson Mitchell (Captain)

Emma Hofmann (Secretary of the club)

Quinton Potter

Malakhi Wheaton

Michael Albert (sub)

Team B:

Ryan Meyer (Captain - President of the club)

Aahir Ghosh

Rohan Raj

Carrie Wang

“My Knowledge Bowlers found it very challenging, since it was quite a different format from the traditional Knowledge Bowl format they have been practicing for weekly.  Our two teams worked hard to prepare and were very competitive, however, did not advance to the playoffs,” said Knowles. “More importantly, my students told me they enjoyed the unique experience. Overall, there was a lot of good sportsmanship and comradery with the other high school students, who were very fun to compete against and very supportive of one another in the process.”  Great job Wildcats!
