Cascade View Teacher Receives ‘Hero in the Classroom’ Award
Cascade View Elementary School kindergarten teacher Connie Guinn was honored as a ‘Symetra Hero in the Classroom’ by the Seattle Seahawks and Symetra Financial Corporation, during a surprise classroom presentation on September 19, 2016.
Guinn is one of 16 teachers across the Puget Sound area that will be honored for K-12 educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2016 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and they receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. In addition, they receive tickets to a Seahawks home game, a pre-game VIP sideline experience, a custom jersey and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at CenturyLink Field. Guinn will be recognized at the September 25 game when the Seahawks take on the San Francisco 49ers.
“For the past few years I've known her, Connie Guinn has talked about how consistently wonderful her classes have been, how much she loves what she does and how much she wants to see her students succeed,” said Jennifer Lundeen. “This is Connie’s first year with a kindergarten class after several years teaching older elementary school students. I’ve no doubt that she will bring the same unconditional love and commitment she always has — knowing her role as teacher is so very important and that what she does and says reflects on her students.” Lundeen nominated Guinn for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® award.
“Connie recently received a message from a fourth-grade teaching colleague who has many of the students that Connie taught last year,” said Lundeen. “The colleague relayed that the prior two days of school had been the best start to a school year she had ever had. When she asked her new students where they had gotten the tenacity to be such good learners, they replied ‘Ms. Guinn!’ With that kind of response in mind, how very fortunate her new kindergarten class is!”
Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students' lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills.
