Career Exploration Friday Offers Construction Industry Insight

Did you know that you can make between $16-$42 an hour working in the construction industry? Did you know that 100% of UW Construction Management graduates were placed with jobs immediately upon graduation with a salary of $60,000 or more?  Do you want to learn more about the variety of careers involved in the construction field for men and women, both hands-on labor positions, as well as office jobs?

On Friday, November 16, Snoqualmie Valley students will have the opportunity to get a tour of an active construction site and learn from professionals in the field about the skills, education, certifications and pathways available to pursue construction jobs.

Mount Si High School and Two Rivers School students can now get “real life” exposure to exciting career opportunities through Career Exploration Fridays – thanks to a partnership between the Snoqualmie Valley Chamber of Commerce, Snoqualmie Valley Community Network, and Snoqualmie Valley School District.  Be a part of this exciting new opportunity!

The first Career Exploration Friday this year, on November 16, will focus on the construction industry with a field trip visit to a building site that is being constructed by Abbott Construction – a new YMCA building in Kent, Washington.  Abbott Construction will lead our students through the work site, share information about a wide variety of construction industry job opportunities, and answer students’ questions.

All Interested High School Students (MSHS and TRS):  Please sign up at: by Wednesday, November 14, at 4 p.m.

Also, two forms will be required to participate: a field trip permission slip (pick up at your school’s front office) and a waiver form from Abbott Construction. Both forms must be completed, signed, and returned to your school by the end of the school day, on Thursday, November 15.  Mount Si students: return your forms to Kristeen Ransavage in the Career Center, or to the Freshman Campus front office. Two Rivers students: return your forms to Rhonda Schmidt.

This opportunity will be available to the first 60 students on a first come, first served basis -- so don’t wait to sign up.

On Friday, November 16, bus transportation will be provided as follows:

  • Pick up students: at Two Rivers School (10:50 a.m.) and at Mount Si High School’s main campus (11:10 a.m.) Freshmen have time to ride the shuttle to the main campus to catch this bus.
  • Depart construction site (2 p.m.): return to Mount Si High School (2:45 p.m.) and return to Two Rivers School (3 p.m.)

(Schools release early November 16 for parent-teacher conferences, so students won’t miss classes.)

Career Exploration Fridays provide students an opportunity to visit a variety of compelling local and Puget Sound area businesses to learn about a wide range of jobs. Students are able to observe jobs in action and talk with professionals about their careers. The opportunities range from jobs which require limited skills training, to some that call for specialized certification, to others that need advanced degrees. The ultimate goal is to build connections between students, teachers, and businesses – to better inform all about career pathways, education options, and opportunities available for students to pursue high wage, high demand jobs.
