Two Mount Si High School band students -- seniors Mary Piekarczyk, who plays clarinet, and James Kolke, who plays trombone -- auditioned and have been accepted to the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) All-State Concert Band. They were selected out of 1,870 high school musicians who auditioned across Washington State, to receive this top honor of participating in one of the 2019 WMEA All-State performing groups.
The WMEA All-State Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Choir will meet in Portland, Oregon, on February 15-17, at the All-Northwest Conference. The students will rehearse and perform in concert under the direction of world-renowned conductors.
According to WMEA event sponsors, many professional musicians credit their All-State experience as life-changing and crucial in their decision to choose music as a career. Plus, honorees whose career paths took them in other directions have great memories of participating in this inspiring and motivating musical event.
Mount Si High School Director of Bands Bill Leather added, “Being named to the WMEA All-State band is a tremendous honor. Both James and Mary will be representing Mount Si High School at the All-Northwest Conference in Portland, as some of the very best musicians in the state of Washington. We are extremely proud of their commitment to excellence!”
