Debate Team Places 3rd in State and Qualifies for Nationals

The Mount Si High School Speech and Debate team has had an extremely successful year – earning 20 state bids this year. They attended 12 tournaments in the regular season and traveled to three Tournament of Champions bid tournaments, including one at Evanston Township High School in Chicago. (See photo of the team, at the end of the story.)

Most recently, two Mount Si teams (of two) competed at the State Speech and Debate Competition at the University of Puget Sound on March 23.  The team of Paytan Murray and Brad Smith placed 3rd at state in Public Forum Debate.  Murray was also honored individually as the 10th overall speaker at the state-wide competition.

At the 2019 State Speech and Debate Competition, two teams represented Mount Si High School.

Juniors Brad Smith and Paytan Murray (on the left) and brothers Abbas and Asad Jaffery (12th and 9th graders, respectively)

were joined by MSHS alumni Ryan Hartman (in the center). Hartman, who was the state debate champion

when he was a senior, volunteered his time to help out the team and coach Chelsea King this year.

At the end of April, those same two Mount Si teams will be traveling to the University of Kentucky to compete in the Tournament of Champions.

In addition, Murray and Smith qualified for a spot at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas, Texas, during the week of June 17-22.
