We welcome two new administrators to the Snoqualmie Valley School District, who were introduced at the May 23 School Board meeting. Dr.Greg Forrest was hired to be the Opstad Elementary Principal next year (replacing Principal Ryan Hill who is moving to Idaho this summer), and Dr. Beth Porter was hired as the new Executive Director of Human Resources (replacing HR Director Lynn Heikkila who is retiring in June).
Beth Porter and Greg Forrest officially start their new roles in July,
as Executive Director of Human Resources and Opstad Elementary Principal, respectively.
Greg Forrest, Ed.D., was recently hired to be principal of Opstad Elementary School beginning the 2019-20 school year. He joins us from the Bellevue School District where he has been an assistant principal at Bennett Elementary School for the past two years. Prior, he lived in Virginia where he was an elementary assistant principal for three years, while completing his doctorate. He has taught middle school and elementary students for four years in English Language Arts (ELA), math, science and social studies. Forrest earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Liberty University in Virginia; a Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership from Southeastern University in Florida; and his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech. He shared that he grew up in Idaho, and was pleased to move back to the Northwest with his family after completing his education.
Beth Porter, Ed.D., has been hired to be Executive Director of Human Resources for our district. She currently serves in this role as Executive Director of HR for the Renton School District, where she’s provided HR leadership and a broad range of employee support for the past three years. Previously, Porter was a school administrator at Snohomish High School – serving as the high school principal for eight years (during a 5-year construction project), the freshman campus principal one year, and an assistant principal for six years prior. She began her education career teaching math, history and leadership in the Lake Washington School District for 10 years. Porter earned a Bachelor of Science from Columbia Christian College, a Masters of Education degree from City University, and continued at Seattle Pacific University earning her Administrator Certification, then Superintendent Certification, before earning her Doctor of Education degree. She explained that she’s excited to be a part of the Snoqualmie Valley, and enjoys the connections that a smaller community offers.
Both Porter and Forrest were hired following in-depth interviews over the last month. Their positions were posted and each attracted a pool of applicants that includes internal and external candidates. Finalists interviewed with staff, principals, district administrators, and parents (in the case of the OES principal position), prior to Snoqualmie Valley Superintendent Rob Manahan making the final hiring decisions.
Dr. Manahan added, “I am pleased to welcome both Beth Porter and Greg Forrest to join our district’s leadership team. As Executive Director for Human Resources, Dr. Porter is a proven leader, learner and visionary who brings a wealth of experience and insights to the district -- that will help support our staff and continue our focus on empowered teaching and learning. Similarly, I’m excited for Dr. Forrest to join SVSD. I believe his passion for elementary education, positive leadership, and commitment to help every child learn will build upon the great work happening at Opstad. Please join me in welcoming both to the Snoqualmie Valley School District!”
