Mount Si High School Principal John H. Belcher has been selected as the KingCo League Distinguished Principal of the Year. This honor, awarded by the Washington Association of Secondary School Principals (WASSP), recognizes a principal who has demonstrated a deep commitment to students, academic excellence and positive school-community relations.
"In the past year and a half since John came on board here in the Snoqualmie Valley School District, there have been several significant initiatives and positive developments that expand upon past successes and many achievements at Mount Si High School. He brings tremendous energy, a strong focus on student voice, tireless commitment to raising achievement, and pervasive PRIDE for all things Mount Si. Students throughout our district will continue to benefit from John's superb leadership as they attend Mount Si High School, and the Freshman Campus next year," stated Superintendent Joel Aune.
The criteria for this award are based on the Association's seven principal responsibilities and leadership needs defined for learning-driven schools:
Indicates a willingness to take risks to improve student learning.
Indicates the anticipation of emerging issues/problems and effectively acts to address them.
Indicates clear examples of action to implement goals and objectives.
Indicates a commitment to fostering a positive school climate reflected by high school staff and student morale.
Indicates community involvement in the life of the school and use of community resources for students.
Indicates creativity and imagination in bringing about positive change.
Belcher joined the Snoqualmie Valley School District in July of 2011 as the head principal of Mount Si High School. He was the principal at Omak High School for seven years prior, during which he earned his Superintendent Certification. He also served in the Northshore School District for nine years as an assistant principal and science teacher.
"Mr. Belcher is a joy to work with. He listens and collaborates on all we do in PTSA. As a parent, I appreciate his accessibility and responsiveness - his door is always open," said Cathy Renner, PTSA co-president for Mount Si High School.
"Principals have a profound influence on a school's quality of education and the satisfaction of parents, staff and students. They also have significant responsibilities - in terms of scope, magnitude and importance - and extremely high standards to uphold. We are fortunate to have outstanding, capable, caring leaders like John guiding our schools. Please join me in congratulating Mr. Belcher on this well-deserved recognition," added Aune.
As a League Principal of the Year, Belcher may be considered for the Washington State High School Principal of the Year recognition.
Last year, Mount Si High School's Associate Principal Greg Hart was selected as the KingCo League's 2011-12 Distinguished Assistant Principal of the Year.
