Student Mentors Welcome 6th Graders and Freshmen

On the first day of school, September 2, 2015, two schools sponsored special activities designed to welcome incoming students, who are transitioning to their schools. Twin Falls Middle School introduced a new WEB Program for 6th graders beginning middle school; and Mount Si High School ran its LINK Crew program to welcome all incoming freshmen.

At Twin Falls Middle School, WEB stands for “Where Everybody Belongs”. The purpose of the WEB Leadership program is to have students leading and creating a positive school culture. Preparations began last spring when TFMS teachers, Emily Rourke (8th) and Jodi Zygar (6th) attended a three-day WEB training session. In anticipation of this fall, they interviewed, selected and trained 64 Twin Falls students to help lead the program. The group, who are now 8th graders, met at the end of last year and again in late August to prepare for an exciting first day of school.

On the first day of school, the day began with a staggered start. Sixth grade students (along with the 8th grade WEB student leaders) attended school at the “regular” time (around 7:40 a.m.), while 7th graders and the rest of the 8th grade class began at 11:45 a.m., on the first day only. The morning was focused on welcoming the new class of 6th grade students through a variety of fun activities to help them forge friendships, and get familiar with their new school.

Mount Si High School also initiated a similar program last year called Link Crew, which it featured again this year at the Freshman Campus to welcome all freshmen. On the first day of school, all 9th grade students and approximately 100 Link Crew Leaders started school on time at 7:4O a.m. on September 2, while other MSHS students (in grades 10-12) started their day a bit later, at 10:40 a.m. Link Crew Leaders are junior and senior student leaders and positive role models who have been trained to help guide freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful during their transition to high school and help facilitate freshman success.

Below are photos from both activities that focus on making connections and building confidence among the schools’ newest students – for a successful start to their school experience.
