Debate Duo Qualifies for Kentucky Tournament of Champions!
On January 9, Mount Si High School’s Debate Team participated in the 82nd Annual University of Puget Sound Forensics Tournament in Tacoma. With 22 students (11 teams) competing in all three categories of Public Forum debate: Open, Junior and Novice, the Mount Si team brought back a total of 16 awards!
“The highlight was the win in the Open Public Forum category,” explained Speech & Debate Coach Chelsea King. “This being a ‘bid’ tournament for the national Tournament of Champions in Kentucky, students needed to reach the finals to get a bid. Ruary Thompson and Dana Korssjoen came home, not only with the first place finish, but also earned that bid. This was their second bid earned this year, which means they have now qualified to compete at the Tournament of Champions in Kentucky in April! We are so proud of these two seniors!”
This will be the fourth consecutive year that a Mount Si High School team has qualified to compete at the prestigious Tournament of Champions (TOC). And according to King, no other school in Washington State has ever qualified for the TOC. The following debate teams have made history for the Mount Si High School community, and our state:
2013 – Andrew Hartman and Ryan Hartman
2014 – Ryan Hartman and Kevin Pusich
2015 – Ryan Hartman and Kevin Pusich
2016 – And now, Ruary Thompson and Dana Korssjoen – Congratulations!
