PPP Students Compete in Regional History Day Event
Two middle school students from the District’s Parent Partnership Program (PPP) – Elsa Marsh and Alex Julian – recently participated in a regional competition for Washington History Day. At the March 12 event at Liberty High School, their projects were featured among 121 entries from 205 participating students.
Representing the Snoqualmie Valley, Elsa Marsh, an 8th grader, created a website featuring historical information about the three Puget Sound-area forts, called “The Triangle of Fire.” Also, sixth grader Alex Julian created an exhibit board called “The Secrecy of Hanford.” Marsh’s website advanced to the final round of the competition.
Alexandra Clark, lead teacher for the Parent Partnership Program explained, “It was our first year trying this activity at PPP. The two students who participated in the competition each spent over 50 hours working on their research projects and learned a lot about our state. It was a fun event, involving in-depth research and performance-based learning, that I’m sure will be memorable for the students.”
The National History Day program is a year-long education program that culminates in a national contest every June. Starting with local events, students are encouraged to become historians by developing research, analysis, presentation and social skills. Working individually or in groups, junior (grades 6-8) and senior (9-12) division students select a topic related to an annual theme. They conduct extensive historical research using primary sources, articles, and books, then distill their research and analysis into a dramatic performance, multimedia documentary, museum exhibit, website, or research paper. The Parent Partnership Program serves approximately 80 students in grades K-10 this year. The Snoqualmie Valley School District began the program in 2013 to partner with families who prefer to school their students at home. The PPP provides certificated teachers, support with student learning plans, curriculum and technology resources, and classroom space for classes that meet once or twice weekly.
